Psychotherapy, Brief Therapy and

Counselling for Individuals and

Couples

I work as psychotherapist, counsellor, supervisor and trainer in Salisbury, and Central London. I have been doing this for over 25 years.  I have been involved for longer with the human potential movement from its early days of London and have two grown-up sons and a teenage step-daughter.

I am a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist,

and a British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy ( BACP) Senior Accredited Counsellor and Supervisor.

Therapy and Counselling

Often all we know is that we need to talk to someone; we need some help. At that time the whole world of counselling and psychotherapy can seem a bit confusing, or intimidating. Counselling and psychotherapy are not the same and there are many types of psychotherapy. All psychotherapy and counselling  involves a relationship between you and the therapist.  It is important to choose someone you feel you can come to trust and who provides the support, safety and clarity you may need.  The best way to do this is with an initial meeting so that you can meet me and vice versa.  All my work is based on the whole person, body, mind and spirit.

Information for Clients

Initial Meeting – I view the first meeting as a mutual assessment of whether to work together or not. Choosing a psychotherapist or counsellor is a very important decision and I take choosing to work with a new client, particularly with the commitment of psychotherapy, as an important decision. Therefore an initial meeting of approximately half an hour is without charge.

If you decide you wish to take it further, we will fix an assessment. For this I prefer to have longer than the normal session length and allocate 1½ hours.  An assessment costs £65 payable in advance of the session.

If I feel that what I offer can be of help to you, I will generally say at the end of the assessment. If I believe I can’t be of help then I will give you as much feedback as I can and suggest  referral to another practitioner.  At the assessment session we will discuss the ongoing costs of therapy or counselling. I am keen that as many people as possible can take advantage of the transformative power of good therapy.  My charges are based on £45 per session (slightly more in London) but this can be negotiated. Therapy is an investment in yourself  which will make a difference for the rest of your life. The question is often not so much "Can I afford it?" as "Am I worth it?",

I can offer a range of ways of working from a single consultation via short term, solution-focused counselling and  time limited psychotherapy such as Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) to long-term, depth psychotherapy. I do see a difference between counselling; which is usually focused on problems, the present situation and support to enable new choices; and psychotherapy which has to include the past, the personality and the patterns which are not working in your life. Psychotherapy often involves supporting developmental growth which wasn’t completed earlier in childhood and requires a higher level of commitment and trust.

From the assessment we will clarify how to work together and if you wish we will make an agreement which will cover what basis we are working on; cancellations, fees, payments. I will give some of the broad possibilities here:

  • Short term counselling; we would work for say, 5 more sessions and in the 4th session review our work and decide whether to extend or change the agreement.

  •   Time-limited psychotherapy; we would decide to do undertake a form of psychotherapy (probably based on CAT) of 16 or perhaps 24 weekly sessions; with a follow-up after 3 months and 6 months. This will involve some homework (writing or practice) between sessions.

  •   Open-ended psychotherapy; we would agree to me accompanying you on a journey of therapy which may take from a few months to a few years. You can end at any time but ending such a therapeutic relationship is a process which requires some time. Therefore a period of notice would be needed which would vary according to how long we had been working together but about one week for every two months we have worked together is a minimum.

For all these approaches, meeting together regularly, preferably at the same time each week is best. In psychotherapy regularity is crucial. Mostly we will need to meet weekly. With a well-established therapeutic relationship meeting fortnightly may be possible. I am passionate and committed to this work and will do my very best to be present. I will give you my holiday dates when we decide to work together.

I am interested in using new technology like email to enhance the therapy and use, where appropriate some of the recent developments in energy psychology such as Seemorg Matrix Therapy, EFT and TAT. My first psychotherapy training included body psychotherapy and this is one modality which I sometimes incorporate. Essentially we need to develop a new form of therapy for each person; responding to the needs of the relationship: There is no-one-size-fits-all in therapy but there are principles which have evolved over the last hundred years of the development of psychotherapy. I am currently training in Seemorg Matrix Therapy - which has now been renamed as Advanced Integrataive Therapy (AIT) a less obscure name. I am very excited by this powerful new approach to deep psychotherapy which can rapidly clear the energy imprints from trauma which are behind many behaviours and beliefs.(see www.aitherapy.com ) .

 Special Interests

My first training and interest was in body psychotherapy, essentially how our traumas, our history and our personality are structured into our bodies, our posture, our breathing and the way we connect with our energy. I have also had a long interest in spirituality and combine these through running workshops with my wife Hanna, in tantra and tantric kriya yoga. (see www.tantra.uk.com ).  Some people come in to therapy through a spiritual crisis and I am keen that it is not confused with a breakdown. Sometimes energy in the body can feel out of control through, for example Kundalini awakening.

Ethics

I work to the Codes of Ethics of the BACP and the Association of Humanistic Psychology Practitioners (AHPP) which is a member of the UKCP. More information on this can be found on their websites:  www.bacp.co.uk  and  www.psychotherapy.org.uk  or  www.ukcp.org.uk .  AHPP has a website  www.ahpp.org with information on humanistic psychology.
